Rajasthan Royals beat Mumbai indian 5 wickets

Postby raghav on 27 May 2008

Mumbai bowlers did make a determined attempt and tried their best to restrict Warne’s boys to anything less than 145 runs. However, Rajasthan Royals finished at a total of 146 runs and defeated Sachin’s side by 5 wickets. Rajasthan Royals had been defeated by the Mumbai Indians at the Mumbai’s D Y Patil Sports Academy in their previous square-off. And, Warne made sure that at their home-turf, their grit pays them back and make them level scores with their opponents of the day.

Winning the toss, Warne chose to field first. Though, Sachin admitted that he wanted his side to bowl first, he added that he will take the challenge and face it. It cannot be said that the home-turf is an advantage for Rajasthan Royals, a team which is swimming in their top form. Warne's bowlers did a brilliant job by hindering Sachin's batsmen to hit bigger shots, and eventually restricted the lot to 145 runs at loss of 7 wickets. Pakistani paceman Sohail Tanvir earned himself the purple cap as he took his nineteenth IPL wicket in the form of Pollock on the fourth ball of the seventeenth over. In this match he took 4 wickets and gave just 14 runs. He was awarded the man-of the match or his magnificent presentation.

Mumbai players tried their best to squeeze runs, however, the tight fielding on the part of Royals didn’t allow them to do so. In T-20 format where sixes and boundaries are seen in bulk, it was surely not looking for the Mumbai side. The openers Tendulkar and Jaysuriya were playing very cautiously avoiding any loss of wicket. Both tried to run for singles or doubles, while boundaries were too few with no sixes. This was quite evident from the scenario in 10.6 overs which showed 71 runs. The last ball remained to go for the over. Siddhartha Trivedi put the cherry on the cake by taking hitter Jayasuriya's wicket. The Sri Lankan made 38 runs off 37 balls.

The young Royal after getting Jayasuriya out in the eleventh over, struck again in the thirteenth one, following it with Tendulkar's wicket. Master blaster’s batting yielded 30 runs off 34 balls. The following batsmen came with contributing much to be written about. After the top and the middle-order gave away, it was Yogesh Takawale and Rohan Raje on the crease who produced crucial 25 runs out of the last over itself. But, unfortunately, this couldn’t help their side to get the much needed win.

Royals had a get able target of 145 runs, though it didn’t come easy for them. After their first three wickets fell at a gap of twenty balls each, starting from the fourth over, middle-order batsmen Kaif and Watson also couldn’t contribute something significant. It was Niraj Patel and Ravindra Jadeja whose partnership got runs for the Royals and made their side claim the victory, which was looking nearly impossible at one point of time. Patel’s 40 runs off 29 balls and Jadeja’s 23 runs were crucial for the win. Pressure on Mumbai’s players showed in their weak fielding towards the end and helped the Royals take away the win and make their vengeance complete.
